Artist background:
Like many reputed artists, Alex Bask Hostomsky has a fascinating backstory. Hostomsky fled communist Czechoslovakia in the 1980s with his family as a child and spent his formative years growing up in sunny Florida. In fact, Hostomsky’s family actually escaped Czechoslovakia illegally and sought refuge in a refugee camp in Austria.
Even as a child Hostomsky took an early interest in graffiti as an art form, so it’s no surprise that he grew up to be one of the United State’s most popular graffiti artists. However, Hostomsky’s road to success had its fair share of challenges and as a teenager, Hostmosky was a young delinquent who was ordered to perform community service at the Salvador Dali Museum.
Whilst working at the Salvador Dali Museum, one of Hostomsky’s friends was fatally shot and Hostomsky decided that he may be able to forge a better path for himself by becoming an artist. As he already had a keen interest in graffiti art, Hostomsky quickly began work on creating a career for himself as a professional street artist.
The early years:
In his twenties, Alex Bask Hostomsky started to sell his paintings through local galleries, however, he soon began to concentrate on street art as a result of being inspired by Tes One, a friend and collaborator who introduced Hostomsky to the burgeoning graffiti art scene in St Petersburg.
Success:
As a result of being able to create a unique graffiti style of his own, Hostomsky’s work is now displayed in art galleries and museums across the country.
However, you don’t have to visit an art gallery or museum to view Hostomsky’s work as his work can be found on walls around the world. As examples, you can find some of Hostomosky’s graffiti art on walls in Detroit and Brooklyn as well as in international destinations such as St Petersburg, Russia.
Film work:
If you’re a fan of superhero movies, it’s well worth rewatching Iron Man 3 as Hostomsky’s graffiti art is featured throughout Iron Man 3. Which is a testament to just how popular and mainstream his artwork has become.
If you are keen to rewatch Iron Man 3, notice the art in Tony Stark’s lab as it actually a piece commissioned by Alex Bask Hostomsky and is a re-creation of one of her earlier works which was named “When It Rains, It Pours”.
